OLD GLORY TO FLY OVER VIETNAM AND KOREA MEMORIALS
AMVETS National Commander honors veterans
in countdown to Memorial Day

WASHINGTON, May 13, 2008—On Monday, May 12, Old Glory was raised over the Korean War and Vietnam War memorials on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This historic tribute to our military men and women is part of the final leg of Old Glory’s Journey of Remembrance. AMVETS National Commander John P. “JP” Brown III was on hand with the White House Commission on Remembrance to pay tribute to Korea and Vietnam veterans from around the country at the historic flag-raising.  READ MORE

Great American Ballpark to host thousands in honor of Matt Maupin
Public invited to pay their respects in Cincinnati WASHINGTON, April 24, 2008—Army Staff Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin’s funeral will be held this Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m. at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio. The public is invited to pay their respects to the Maupin, the first soldier listed as “missing-in-action” in Iraq. AMVETS will be on hand Sunday to pay respects to Maupin and his family. READ MORE

OHIO SAD SACKS INVEST IN LOCAL NURSES
Mount Vernon Unit 0195 awards scholarships

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio-The local Sad Sacks unit of the AmVets Post #95 recently awarded seven $500 scholarships to area nursing students. Presenting the awards to the students were Hank Sebach, commander of the Mount Vernon Sad Sacks Unit #0195, and Larry Devlin, commander of the Ohio Sad Sacks. 

Recipients included six Mount Vernon Nazarene University students: Bethany Watkins, from Mount Vernon, Ohio; Amber Coots, from Pleasantville, Ohio; Amanda Williams, from West Mansfield, Ohio; Chantele Hazen, from Danville, Ohio; Kristina Fry, from Mount Vernon, Ohio; and Kami Weikel, from Fredericktown, Ohio. Natalie Reddick, a Central Ohio Technical College-Newark student from Mount Vernon, was also a recipient. READ MORE

Walter Reed volunteer and Kohl’s department store help keep troops warm  
WASHINGTON, April 22, 2008—Back in February, AMVETS Post 8 from Knox County, Ill., was looking for a way to help wounded warriors recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. AMVETS Calls on Congress to Take Action on ADA Restoration
Employment discrimination “a slap in the face” to disabled veterans
WASHINGTON, April 21, 2008—In March, AMVETS, along with a coalition of 21 veterans’ service organizations, sent a letter to Reps. Steny Hoyer of Maryland and James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin encouraging Congress
to restore employment protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act. READ MORE

OLD GLORY'S JOURNEY OF REMEMBRANCE
AMVETS and the White House Commission on Remembrance continue to follow Old Glory on its journey across the country. Old Glory’s Journey of Remembrance commenced on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day, when the flag was flown over the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii. Since that day, Old Glory has traveled to seven historic sites around the United States, with 18 sites remaining in the journey.

KAPLAN UNIVERSITY PARTNERS WITH AMVETS TO PROVIDE TUITION DISCOUNTS TO VETERANS
Youngstown, Ohio, March 1, 2008— Kaplan University, a leading provider of online higher education, today signed an agreement with American Veterans, Inc. (AMVETS) to provide selected veterans and their families with tuition vouchers totaling more than $7,000 over the course of an online bachelor’s degree program. The agreement was signed during the National 4th District AMVETS Meeting in Ohio.

The agreement was signed in Youngstown, Ohio on Saturday, March 1.
AMVETS, DEVRY UNIVERSITY
TEAM UP FOR VETERANS

AMVETS and Devry University recently announced a new partnership to provide up to 30 new scholarships for veterans and their spouses and childern. Reginning in November the partial-tuition scholarships will be available to those who have applied for or enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs at DeVry University or its Keller Graduate School of Management.
